Kubica started writing at a young age. She began working on her debut novel in 2005, following the birth of her daughter. The author had spent the last two decades experimenting with writing. She had produced a multitude of manuscripts during that period, none of which had ever seen the light of day.
As such, when she sat down to write ‘The Good Girl,’ she had no reason to believe that it was different from the other manuscripts she had abandoned in previous years. Although, this time around, she was determined to take ‘The Good Girl’ as far as the publishing arena would permit her.
Getting her foot through the publishing door was not easy. She submitted the manuscript over a hundred times. However, only one agent accepted her submission.
The development came at the perfect time. The author was about to give up hope. She remembers rushing out in the morning to get the mail in the hopes of finding and removing all the rejection letters before her husband could see them.
She would also delete the letters that came via email. The experience taught her the importance of perseverance. She also realized that publishing is not for the faint of heart. Aspiring writers are destined to fail unless they have an iron will that won’t let them surrender.
Interestingly, the publication of ‘The Good Girl’ was just the beginning of Kubica’s woes. After receiving a two-book deal from HarperCollins, the author stumbled across a serious challenge.
Now that ‘The Good Girl’ was behind her, Kubica’s publishers expected her to write a second book. And naturally, they wanted the second book to match the quality of the author’s debut novel.
Kubica couldn’t stop worrying. She started questioning whether she had the creative talent to pen a second novel. The first proposal she sent to her editor was turned down, a development that threatened to shatter her confidence.
Fortunately, the author had one advantage. Even though she was severely stressed, Kubica was also ecstatic because she was living her dream. A traditional publisher was paying her to tell stories, which is all she’d ever wanted.
Eventually, she wrote ‘Pretty Baby’ and proved once and for all that ‘The Good Girl’ was no fluke. The third novel had its challenges. But by the time she sat down to write ‘Don’t You Cry,’ the author had more confidence in her abilities as a storyteller.
Additionally, Kubica had a brilliant editor who helped her identify and overcome her weaknesses.
The author takes great pleasure in creating new characters from scratch and turning them into real people. It takes her a while to capture their voices, especially when she’s writing a complex story told from multiple points of view.
In fact, her characters feel like strangers to Kubica when she first sits down to write a new manuscript. But as time passes, they become more familiar to her.
Best Mary Kubica Books
The author has encouraged aspiring writers to cultivate a solid social media presence to boost their marketing endeavors. Kubica’s best books include:
The Good Girl: Mia made a grave mistake. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend did not show. Mia should have responded by leaving the bar. But instead, she decided to follow Colin Thatcher home.
Mia was looking for a one-night stand. But it was Colin’s turn to make a mistake. He should have taken Mia directly to his employers. But he chose to keep her in a secluded cabin.
Now, Mia’s mother is on the case, and she won’t stop until she finds her daughter.
Local Woman Missing: Shelby was bad enough. When she went missing, her peaceful community started asking questions. But then Meredith made things worse when she disappeared along with Delilah, her 6-year-old daughter.
The community fell into a panic. Where had Meredith gone? How come she had disappeared a few blocks from where the first victim was last seen?
The community had too many questions and not enough answers. So naturally, the case went cold. A little over a decade later, Delilah resurfaced.
