Matthew Betley is an American author who writes thrillers. Betley is a native of New Jersey but he grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from St. Xavier High School before pursuing a B.A. in psychology at Miami University, Oxford.

Some people expected the author to become a lawyer because he spent a semester (Senior Year) with the Public Defender’s Office in Washington, D.C. Betley was an intern investigator, a position that allowed him to tackle felony murder cases.

The experience was eye-opening and he could easily fill a non-fiction book with all the stories he collected. Rather than going to law school after graduation, Betley joined the Marine Corps. While he doesn’t regret the decision, the Military was far more challenging than he initially anticipated.

He had the misfortune of being deployed to the Anbar Province at a time when the U.S. was recording heavy casualties in Iraq. During one particularly trying period, rocket and mortar fire became a regular occurrence.

Betley knew a civilian contractor who died because he was working in a reinforced tent when a rocket landed outside and blew the doors open. Every marine who left the camp had to navigate routine ambushes.

Betley and his colleagues grew impatient with their superiors. They wanted to hunt the insurgents in the city. But the politicians running their operation back in D.C. were too busy talking and planning to notice the many marines dying and sustaining injuries in Iraq.

Betley was luckier than most. He was an officer, which meant that he spent most of his time on the base. But his position did not spare him from the grief everyone suffered when their friends went out and died.

He attended more memorials for young marines than he would have liked. The author created the Logan West series because he wanted to keep the memories of his fallen comrades alive. While Betley’s stories are fiction, he takes inspiration from his real-life experiences.

The author took an interest in writing after reading a terrible bestseller and realizing he could pen a better novel. The Logan West books, for which he’s best known, follow a US Marine Corps veteran who develops a dependency on alcohol after losing his men to an ambush in Iraq.

However, his addiction won’t stop Logan from taking action whenever nefarious forces strike at the country he swore to protect.

Like every thriller writer, the author’s primary objective is to entertain. He wants to create an engaging roller coaster ride that hooks readers from the first page. However, he’s also driven by a desire to right the wrongs he sees in the real world.

Betley’s protagonists are strong, honorable characters with the mental fortitude to make the kinds of decisions people in real life rarely make.
