She was fascinated by the many mysteries surrounding the brain. Megan, who went to MIT, graduating with a BS in Biology, started reading and writing at a young age. As a child, she was afraid of everything. And yet, she couldn’t get enough of the thriller novels that littered her mother’s shelf.
Miranda’s mother was an avid fan of the thriller genre, and her collection of novels said as much. The author did not shy away from the dark stories in her mother’s books because the anxiety-inducing journey she had to undertake when she read them was temporary. Regardless of what happened to her favorite protagonists, every story had a definitive end. Miranda knew that if she stuck with the thrillers, she would eventually make it to the other side.
As an author, this same mindset has molded Miranda’s approach to writing. She looks at each new novel as the start of a journey that she has to undertake with her characters as she slowly develops the plot.
Even though she wanted to tell stories for a living, Miranda took several detours before finally settling down to write her first novel. That includes working in biotech. She decided to take a serious crack at publishing when her youngest child turned one. At the time, her primary goal was to complete her first book, an objective she eventually achieved. By that point, there was no turning back. She had too many stories to tell to abandon the publishing industry.
Because Miranda’s stories are character-driven, she starts each new novel by discovering the characters rather than the plot. If she can understand the type of character she wants to explore, it won’t take her long to identity an idea that suits them.
The author doesn’t outline. She wants to discover the story while she writes. Miranda relies on ‘Scrivener’, an application that allows her to write separate scenes. She also uses the program to make notes and lists that she can refer to down the line. This is important because her draft is always evolving and she has to track the changes.
Naturally, she does quite a bit of revision. The author has blocks of time during the day that she has set aside for writing purposes. She guards those hours jealously, especially when she’s drafting.
Miranda prefers to write her novels one at a time. That is the only way she can stay immersed in each story. Though, writing one novel doesn’t stop her from brainstorming ideas for future books.
She is drawn to the YA genre because it allows her to write about characters that are discovering various aspects of life for the first time. She also enjoys writing adult fiction because it forces her to take the previous experiences of her characters into account whenever they encounter a new phenomenon.
Best Megan Miranda Books
The author’s favorite part of the writing process is the beginning. She loves discovering characters for the first time. Things only become difficult when she gets to the plotting stage. Miranda’s best books include:
All The Missing Girls: Ten years ago, Nicolette Farrell’s best friend disappeared. Nicolette left Cooley Ridge soon after. When she returns to look after her father, Nicolette doesn’t expect Corinne’s disappearance to consume her life once more.
But Annaleise has gone missing as well. She was dating Tyler, Nicolette’s ex-boyfriend, and she disappeared just days after Nicollette returned to her rural hometown. That can’t be a coincidence.
The Last House Guest: Avery Greer lived in Littleport, Maine, a town whose coastline was littered with the summer homes of the wealthy. Sadie and Avery were a unique pair because Sadie was a summer girl and Avery was a resident of Littleport. The wealthy visitors of Littleport and their local counterparts rarely consorted with one another.
And yet, Sadie and Avery’s friendship had lasted a decade. When Sadie died, the police dismissed it as a suicide. But some people were convinced that Avery had orchestrated Sadie’s death. That included the dead girl’s brother. To clear her name, Avery must investigate Sadie’s murder before her reputation is permanently stained.
