P.C. Cast is an American author that writes YA fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal romance novels. Born in 1960 in Watseka, Illinois, Cast developed an interest in mythology at a young age.

She joined the US Air Force after high school. Once she left, the author took up writing and public speaking. Cast taught high school for over a decade. But eventually, she retired and became a full-time writer.

The author has been writing for as long as she can remember. In fact, she was still in first grade when she wrote her first book (Blurry The Blue Whale). Although, it was never published.

She knew she was destined for a career in writing and publishing. Cast looks at her creativity as a superpower. Her brain is always inventing new characters, paranormal concepts, and adventures.

However, even though her books are fantastical in nature, she does plenty of research. Because she takes inspiration from real places, she begins her journey by visiting some of those locations.

Once she’s seen enough, the author will create a loose outline from her notes before she sits down to write. Cast has learned to trust her gut. She knows her experience and understanding of storytelling and publishing won’t lead her astray.

Sometimes, the author is too hard on herself. For instance, she occasionally works 12-hour days for several weeks in a row. But whenever she breaks in between to reconsider her ideas, Cast feels like she is letting herself down.

If she isn’t sitting at her computer, she’s doing something wrong. That attitude creeps back up from time to time, but the author is older and wiser, and she doesn’t hesitate to dismiss it. She understands the importance of being kind to herself.

Cast loves revisions. This is her favorite aspect of the writing process. She cannot wait to finish her first draft, so she can put it aside for a week before returning to the manuscript and revising it from the beginning.

Revisions are necessary because Cast doesn’t stick to her outline, not strictly. She knows the beginning and the end, but everything in between is fluid.

For that reason, she avoids detailed outlines. Cast knows that every idea she concocts can undergo drastic changes by the time she completes the final draft.

The author does most of her writing at night. She settles down at her computer at 8:00 p.m and works for 6 hours straight. Sometimes, she gets so immersed in her world that she cannot help but write for 12 or more hours in one go.

These writing sessions are exhausting but also gratifying. Cast uses a tread-desk that allows her to walk as she writes. She keeps a pot of tea on hand, along with research books and her dogs.

P.C. Cast doesn't seem to have an upcoming book. Their newest book is Draw Down the Moon and was released on April, 2nd 2024. It is the newest book in the Eferum Series.
