Sharon Sala is an American author that has written Westerns, Romance, YA, and Women’s fiction. She joined the publishing field in 1991 and then went on to write over a hundred novels, some of which won Sala awards.

A native of Oklahoma with Native American great-grandmothers, Sala started reading at 4. She was obsessed with Emily Loring and Zane Gray, not to mention Grace Livingston Hill.

While reading brought a lot of joy to the author, writing changed her life. Sala is unique because her stories begin in her dreams. In fact, for the longest time, she thought that other people were the same.

Sala’s stories would play out like movies in her mind as she slept. But she did not write them, not at first. Like many aspiring authors, Sala had a job that kept her busy. However, she hated going to work. The job was far from fulfilling. Her marriage wasn’t any better.

Sala’s decision to write was not driven by any particular event. She came home one night and found her old typewriter. She sat down and started putting the stories in her dreams on paper. It took the author a year to complete her first manuscript.

But it was terrible. She had read enough good novels to realize that her writing fell far below the acceptable standard. So she abandoned the story and started another one. But it was also bad. So Sala gave up.

She slid the manuscripts under her bed and forgot about them. She did not return to them until the mid-80s. First, her father died. And then, her only sibling followed just two months later.

Sala pondered their deaths, specifically the fact that all their dreams and plans had gone to the grave with them. The tragedy drove her to revisit her manuscripts. This time around, she sought help. Sala joined a writer’s group that taught her everything she needed to know about pacing, plotting, and dialogue.

She wrote a second book. She sold the manuscript to the first publisher she came across. This started the author on her journey in publishing. While she appreciated the fact that her dreams had finally come to pass, life as a published author was far from easy.

Most of her challenges can be imputed to her mother. The woman was diagnosed with dementia. With her husband and daughter dead, Sala was the only one that could care for her.

She moved in with her mother and spent the next decade looking after the woman. However, the task eventually overwhelmed Sala. She was forced to send her mother to a memory care facility. But the facility was expensive and it eventually consumed her mother’s savings.

Before long, Sala had spent everything she had as well. Her house was gone and so were her life savings. She was forced into a position where she had to write, not for the love of storytelling, but because she needed the money. Sala enjoys sharing her personal trials with her fans on social media.
