Sylvia Day is a Japanese American author that writes romance novels. The international bestseller has won numerous awards and sold millions of copies of her books. Along with attracting interest from studios that want to adapt her stories for the big and small screen, Sylvia makes frequent appearances at literary events and workshops as a panelist.

The author was 12 years old when she realized that she wanted to write romance novels for a living. Her mother gave her Diane Dunaway’s ‘Desert Hostage’ and told her to find a husband like the book’s protagonist.

The novel sunk its hooks into Sylvia. She was depressed when the story finally came to an end. However, Sylvia also realized that she wanted to write stories like the one she had just completed.

That dream wouldn’t come to pass for several years. The author’s mother raised her. She met her father for the first time at the age of 16. He was living in Germany when she flew out to meet him.

In the weeks that followed, she learned that children were a sore subject for her parents. Her father wasn’t so sure he wanted children. Her mother disagreed.

Like her peers in the field, she puts a lot of herself into her work. But none of her characters were directly inspired by real people. Although, she has plenty of inspiration to draw from.

The author joined the military at 22, working for the U.S. Army Military Intelligence as a Russian Linguist. Her days as a Russian interrogator came in handy when she kickstarted her publishing career in the early 2000s. She had a better understanding of the human psyche than most people.

The single mother had to suffer through the trials of divorce, an experience she cannot describe to anyone that has never struggled with the concept. Her encounter with such potent heartache has shaped some of the stories she writes.

People frequently compare her work to E.L. James’ Fifty Shades series. But she doesn’t understand the comparisons. While her sex scenes are steamy, they are nowhere near as racy as the sex E.L. James writes.

Her characters don’t experiment with toys. Sylvia looks at every sex scene as a tool that moves the story forward. It must have emotional resonance. This is why great sex scenes require so much time and effort.
