Best Vox Day Books:
The Last Witchking: The Last Witchking is a novel consisting of three short stories set in a fantasy world known as A Throne of Bones. The main character is the son of a Witchking. Witchkings were once most feared sorcerers who bedeviled the land without showing mercy until they were utterly destroyed. When he learns of his legacy and paternity, the main character assumes the footsteps of his father and proves himself quite skillful at the deadly sorcery and power games, growing even more powerful and self-centered.
The second short story in the title is The Hoblets of Wiccam Fensboro. The Orcs invade and occupy the goblins village. The Orcs have a hatred of hobbits that have co-existed peacefully with the goblins for millions of years. The second story gives explores themes such as duty, sacrifice and doing the best thing in the face of an imminent destruction.
Then there is the third story Opera Vita Aeterna. This is a story that has a mix of fantasy with the actual Christianity. Mixing of religion and fantasy worlds has been done previously by different authors but in some rare occasions. In this story, Day explores religion a bit with a classic tale of the elven sorcerer, one of the powerful of his kind. The sorcerer is super impressed by the faith and the bravery of a human monk such that he visits a monastery to learn more about the “dead god” that the humans respect so much. The author explores a range of topics in this story such as religious conversions, nature of friendships, and the purpose of faith in the hour of trials, and the quest for knowledge.
The two main characters have a genuine and warm relationship despite all the possible differences that could destroy their friendship. There is also a character that makes a decision based on hatred bringing the readers to an emotional climax. Readers who fancy either religious stories, fantasy or even both will find this story quite appealing.
Overall the writing of The Last Witchking is a brilliant well-woven novel that by far focuses on a range of serious issues that have a significant impact on the human condition.
A Throne of Bones: A Throne of Bones is the first book in Arts of Dark and Light series by Vox Day. The author brilliantly re-imagines the ancient Rome with warlike creatures including goblins, Orcs, and trolls playing the roles of marauders, Mongols. Day’s version of Rome also features magic and a neighboring human empire that resembles the feudal England.
In Selenoth, the race of man is on the ascend to the throne, the evil Witchkings have been overpowered together with their evil power by the magic of Elves and the courage of men. Subsequently, the dwarfs have retreated to their territory of the Underdeep while the trolls seek their refuge in their mountains and even the deadly Orcs have learned to fear the iron discipline of the Amorran legions.
However, after four centuries of suspicion, the hatred, and rivalry between two of the honored Houses Martial that head the People and Senate threatens to turn violent, even as uprising starts with the borders of the imperial provinces.
In the North, the barbarian reavers are seeking the protection of the King of Savondir from attacks by wolf-demons while in the east, drums of war pound heavily as goblins and Orcs unite together in groundbreaking numbers summoned by their grim gods. When the most sanctified and Holy Father body is found lying lifeless on his bed leaving the Ivory Throne unclaimed, the temptations to take control of the Sacred College and Holy Mother Church becomes something that not even the fallen souls can resist.
The first book is a brilliant read; it is narrated from different point of views that often switch without affecting the overall story. The chapters are interwoven, the characters are well woven and compelling, and some are likable. The author has created a world that is interesting; there is a mix of medieval Europe and the ancient Rome. The primary focus of the story is in Rome, but this adds a lot to the novel by distinguishing it from the generic fantasy stories. The author also touches a bit on Christianity, but he does not delve much on this theme though.
A Sea of Skulls: In Selenoth, the drums are beating crazily loud throughout the land as everyone is preparing for war. The Orcs of Zoth Ommog and Hagahorn are on the move endangering Dwarf, Elf, and Man. The Houses of Martial have waged war against each other, pitting family against family, legion against legion as civil war harrows fragmenting empire.
Far in the north, the wolf demons overwhelm the last hope of Man in the White Sea while in Savondir kingdom the loyal house prepares to defend the kingdom against an invading army that is large that any that it has faced before. On the other hand, in the Underground world of the King of Iron Mountain, a mysterious nemesis has been attacking the dwarfs throughout the Underdeep territories.
In the midst of the violence that has taken over Selenoth, a select few begin to recognize the appearance of historical patterns of unimaginable proportions.
A Finalist in 2017 Dragon Award for the Best Fantasy Novel, A Sea of Skulls is an epic fantasy tale and one of most celebrated masterpiece by Vox Day.
