Readers are introduced to the series protagonist, Maggie Gerber, in 50% Off Murder, the first novel in the Good Buy Girls Mystery series. Maggie Gerber stands at the head of the Good Buy Girls, a group of serious shoppers that meet on a regular basis to discuss the best ways to make bargain purchases.
The Good Buy Girls are the best there is at what they do. They know how to distribute coupons to get the best possible value for every purchase. And their efforts are recognized and respected in the small town of St. Stanley in Virginia.
For Maggie, the Good Buy Girls is more than just an effective means for hoarding money. The middle-aged woman is a widow with one child who lives in a household that isn’t exactly financially stable.
So she understands the importance of budgeting properly in order to stay afloat. Though, that doesn’t mean Maggie doesn’t have fun. The Good Buy Girls are divas of the highest order. They love all things feminine and there’s nothing they enjoy more than using their bargain hunting skills to spoil themselves.
Maggie’s life takes an interesting turn when Sam Collins comes to town and takes up the role of Sheriff. Sam was Maggie’s boyfriend in high school. Things did not end well between them.
So when one of the Good Buy Girls is suspected of murder and Sam arrests her, Maggie is quick to jump to her aid, a step that puts her at odds with Sam.
The Good Buy Girls Mystery series primarily follows Maggie around as she uses her bargain hunting skills to solve mysteries. St. Stanley is supposed to be a peaceful little town. However, people keep dying and Maggie typically comes into the picture because a lot of the murder victims are connected to her and her friends in some way.
When the heroine isn’t solving murders or chasing after discounts or even getting into fights with Sam Collins, she can be found feuding with Summer Philips, another middle-aged diva who hates Maggie.
The Good Buy Girls books have been commended for their strong set of characters, especially their core group of women whose strong bond and the support they give to one another during the good and the bad times have inspired some readers.
On the other hand, a portion of Jenn McKinlay’s audience often complains that her characters act like children despite the fact that most of them are over forty. This is especially true for Maggie, the primary protagonist, and her rival Summer.
Best Good Buy Girls Mystery Books
The Good Buy Girls novels are fairly standard cozy mysteries, with some of the best titles in the series including:
A Deal to Die For: Vera Madison is a wealthy woman whose decision to sell her vintage clothes has got the Good Buy Girls club excited about the St. Stanley flea market. Maggie has a second-hand shop and she believes that Vera’s clothing could do great things for her business.
She needs all the help she can get now that Summer Phillips, her rival, has opened her own shop nearby. Things start off poorly when Vera is found dead. The wealthy woman had more enemies than she knew what to do with and Maggie and the Good Buy Girls quickly begin sifting through the suspects in the hopes of finding the real killer.
Buried in Bargains: Maggie and the Good Buy Girls have a holiday thrift shop sale coming up, their first big one, so everyone’s pretty excited. Though, Joanne Claramotta seems a little too reserved. Some people think it’s because she’s pregnant but Maggie knows that Diane Jenkins, her husband Micheal’s new attractive assistant might be the cause.
When Diane ends up dead and Michael unconscious, Maggie discovers that there might have been more to the victim than meets the eye.
