Maureen Coughlin, Bill Loehfelm’s most popular creation, takes center stage as a desperate young lady struggling to find her place in the world. When she is first introduced to readers in The Devil She Knows, Maureen is 29-years-old and she’s going nowhere.

Maureen’s childhood wasn’t especially pleasant. Her father abandoned the family and her mother never moved on from the betrayal. Now in her late 20s, Maureen is just as lost as her parents. She works as a waitress at a Staten Island bar and the gig barely pays her bills.

And it isn’t like the work is satisfying, which is why Maureen will admit that she drinks too much and that her smoking habit is approaching dangerous levels. It doesn’t help her situation that she finds the most inappropriate opportunities to do coke.

All in all, Maureen Coughlin is a mess and she knows she isn’t going anywhere. But that is what sets her apart. Maureen is aware of her predicament. She isn’t blind to her weaknesses and she is always looking for a way out of the quagmire that is her life.

And when that opportunity finally surfaces, she wastes no time in taking it, though she initially doesn’t see it as the gift it promises to be. Maureen’s life begins to change when she stumbles upon a rising political star by the names of Sebastian in a compromising situation.

Maureen knows that what she just witnessed could bring ruin to Sebastian who is running for State Senate. And she wants to believe that promising to keep her mouth shut will put the whole encounter behind her.

However, when a man ends up dead and everything Maureen knows begins to point to Sebastian as the killer, she realizes that it will take all her wit and cunning to escape the fury of an evil man that might want her dead.

The adventure is exactly what Maureen Coughlin needs to escape her dull routine. And it isn’t long before the protagonist transitions from damsel in distress to rookie cop in New Orleans.

The Maureen Coughlin series is essentially the story of Maureen trying to find her footing in the New Orleans Police Department. Policing is no picnic and, no matter the training and preparation she receives, Maureen keeps stumbling into extraordinary trouble that is almost always beyond her ability to overcome.

Maureen divides audiences mostly because she isn’t very likable and has a penchant for making the worst possible decisions for her life.

Best Maureen Coughlin Books

Maureen Coughlin is solely responsible for catapulting Bill Loehfelm, the author, into stardom, with some of the best books in the Maureen Coughlin series including:

The Devil in Her Way: Maureen Coughlin is in her final week of field training to become a cop, and things are not going well. She already took a punch to the face from a panicked suspect. And even though the incident saw the police recover some drugs and guns, Maureen doesn’t appreciate the black eye.

And if the altercation didn’t shake Maureen’s confidence, she was more than a little spooked when she witnessed something sinister between two neighborhood boys. Maureen knows she should keep her nose out of it.

But the rookie cop cannot help but think that there is more to the story of what she witnessed than meets the eye. It doesn’t take Maureen long to regret her decision to pursue the investigation.

Doing the Devil’s Work: Maureen Coughlin is a fully fledged cop in New Orleans. Her attempts to cement her place in the New Orleans Police Department are complicated by a late-night traffic stop that goes wrong and a mysterious corpse that raises several unnerving questions.

Maureen is forced to confront the corrupt and dysfunctional nature of her department even as she faces off against a murderous nemesis.

  1. New Orleans is one of the great American cities and I have been dying for a series to tackle the city and the Maureen Coughlin does a great job of doing so. The series police department is portrayed as one of the most corrupt in the country so Maureen has an uphill battle as an outsider.

It takes awhile to get used to Maureen, but once you do you will fall in love with the character and the series.
