The Max & Martha series of novels are excellent reads for children as their themes deal with the everyday problems that confront chidden. Some common themes in the series include corruption, politics, family intrigue, and romance making them a favorite with children.
The first novel in the series “Martha’s New Daddy” introduces Martha, a five-year-old who lives with her mother in San Francisco, California. Martha gets to see her father every week and loves hi very much even though he divorced her mother several years past. Her mother comes home to tell her the news that she plan to remarry very soon. As is expected, Martha who had always wanted her parents to get back together is disappointed though she holds nothing against her mother’s fiancée John.
She decides to tell her father the news and gauge his reaction. Moreover, she hopes her father can help her cope with the difficult news she has just received. Mother’s New Daddy is an endearing portrait of family in which award-winning novelist Steel asserts that love and continuity is possible even when one parent remarries.

Martha’s New Daddy: The first novel in the series is one of the Max & Martha series’ most popular. The novel is an exceptional narrative that would be best for children aged between 5 and 7 that may have problems with blended family units. Children that may have had one of the significant family members such as mother or father leave or separate may gain greater understanding from this novel. A child who is undergoing the emotional roller coaster will relate with Martha’s struggles to process her feelings when her mother decides to remarry. Steel excellently paints a delicate picture on how a child can deal with blended family situations such as remarriage or adoption, through its lead character Martha.
Martha’s New School: This is another incredible novel featuring Martha as a six-year-old girl living with her mother and her new husband John. Since she was born, Martha has lived in their old house and gone to a school, which she absolutely adores. Her mother and her new husband want to move to Sausalito, a small town where John just bought a new house. Martha is terrified of going to her new school, and particularly dreads her first day. The novel, which is written by a mother of nine explicitly portrays the terrors and fears of a child going to a new school, and how to help them deal with such worries and transform them into new joy and experiences.
Max and Grandpa and Grandpa Winky: This is another gripping title in the series featuring Max the second lead in the series. Max is waiting for a visit from Grampa and Grandma Winky, since it has been a long time since he last saw them. His family had moved to Arizona taking him away from his beloved grandparents a few years ago, an event that had been hard on the young Max. However, his grandfather calls to say his grandmother is very ill and soon after she is dead.
The news hits the family very hard, though his mother helps him to the very best of her ability to explain to him that the memories of his grandmother will always stay with him. Grandpa also does the utmost to comfort him, telling him his grandmother would love to see him happy and continue with his life rather than be sad. “Max and Grandpa and Grandpa Winky” is another excellent novel that helps parents with information on how to help children dealing with catastrophic loss of loved ones.
