Her mother can attest to this because Candance would tell her stories while she did chores. The woman preferred Candance’s guitar and folk songs, which the girl introduced later on.
The author studied under catholic nuns. The teachers were a varied bunch. The nuns had no patience for Candance because she questioned everything. The lay teachers were better because they took every opportunity to encourage the author during her time at Mother of Mercy High School.
She still remembers an American lit teacher that pushed her to write diligently in her journal and a dramatics teacher that taught her to embody the emotions of the characters in her stories. In University, Candance prioritized Anglo-Saxon literature and history.
Eventually, she added a master’s degree (University of Cincinnati, Ohio) to her resume. At one point, the author pursued a Ph.D. program, but she never finished her dissertation for various reasons.
Candance realized early on that scholars discouraged students from specializing in one era of history. But the author ignored the naysayers. She felt like she had finally discovered her lane. Life after university was largely uneventful.
She spent ten years working as a technical writer and editor, a period she appreciates because it allowed the author to identify and hone her writing voice. By the time her agent found a buyer for ‘The Apothecary Rose,’ Candance was ready to dedicate her life to fiction.
The author was just eight years old when she wrote a poem about ballet that American Girl published. The class project sparked her interest in writing. Initially, she was content to tell her mother the stories bouncing around in her imagination.
It had never occurred to her to write them down. Once she discovered her talent for the written word, it would take the author several years to find her footing in publishing. These days, the author’s schedule is quite busy.
She tries to write every single day. Although, other duties occasionally get in the way. Candance doesn’t follow a specific schedule. Each novel has a slow start. But as the story and characters take shape, she starts to pick up speed.
Even though she has word count goals, Candance doesn’t torture herself when she fails to reach them. She doesn’t see the point. Even when life’s many distractions prevent her from putting pen to paper, the author will continue to write in her head, constructing backgrounds, crafting characters, analyzing the twists and turns, and more.
Her goal is to shine a light on those sections of history that people typically ignore. She looks for interesting incidents, trends, and cultures to highlight. The author is drawn to historical mysteries because they have a built-in structure.
She has no interest in experimenting with straightforward historical novels because they limit her scope. She prefers stories with fictional characters she can mold as she pleases.
Best Candance Robb Books
The author wrote novels using the ‘Emma Campion’ pen name. But she has since retired the pseudonym. Candance’s best books include:
The Apothecary Rose: Apothecary Nicholas Wilton runs the shop responsible for dispensing a herbal remedy that killed two pilgrims at a York abbey. Owen Archer is the man the Archbishop has tasked with investigating the mysterious deaths.
But Archer doesn’t want to stand out, which is why he has chosen to masquerade as Wilton’s apprentice. Unfortunately for the Welshman, he can’t help but stand out. His charm is the least of his problems.
Archer lost an eye during the wars in France. These days, he works as an honest spy. It will take all the skills he has honed over the years to unravel the web surrounding Wilton and his beautiful wife.
The Lady Chapel: Someone killed Will Crounce. They slit the wool merchant’s throat and left his severed hand in Gildert Ridley’s tavern lodging. The Archbishop wants answers, and Owen Archer is the only man that can get them.
Unfortunately for Owen, Will’s murder is just the first. When another severed hand is discovered, Owen must lean on his wife’s apothecary skills to find the killer.
