Readers meet Gideon in Gideon’s Gift, the first novel in the Red Gloves series. Gideon initially looks like just another precocious seven-year-old girl. But further exploration reveals that Gideon is actually dying.
She has leukemia and she might not have long to live. But the girl has never allowed her prognosis to get her down. If anything, she uses the knowledge that she doesn’t have long to live to bring a little bit of magic into the lives of every single person she meets.
Gideon’s healing touch comes in handy when she meets Earl. Earl lost his faith in God when he lost his wife and daughter. He never thought he would find love again. But then he came across Gideon and everything changed.
Gideon’s Gift’ is often the first novella in the Red Gloves series that people read, primarily because it was the first novella published. However, one does not need to read this series in order because the stories Karen Kingsbury tells in each installment are independent of one another, only loosely connected by a pair of red gloves.
The novellas generally take place at Christmas time. They each feature a broken protagonist, a hurting man or woman whose choices in life have led them to a place of despair.
And just when they have all but given up on happiness, they come upon the one person that can understand their suffering and in whose hands is the power to lift them out of their place of desperation.
God plays a critical aspect in each story. Karen’s protagonists have either given up on God because of all that has happened to them over the years or they never truly knew him. It takes their relationship with another man or woman for their faith to be reignited.
Most readers agree that Karen’s Red Gloves novellas are predictable. However, they stand out primarily because the characters are so strong and their journeys moving.

Gideon’s Gift: When Gideon prays for a miracle on Christmas, her hope is that it will transpire soon. Gideon has leukemia and she might not live for much longer. But it isn’t until she meets Earl that she realizes that God might be speaking to her.
Earl lost his wife and daughter and that killed his faith. Angry and heartbroken, he now lives on the streets, devoid of any sense of hope. Christmas is a meaningless holiday to the man, or at least it was until Earl met Gideon and she showed him the true meaning of Christmas.
Maggie’s Miracle: Megan Wright did not believe in true love. She married a man out of convenience but she never truly loved him. When he dies, Megan finds that she is more than ready to move on. And as a high-powered attorney, her career keeps her more than a little busy.
But the same cannot be said for her son who was very close to his father. Megan does what she can to console him but she doesn’t know if she can offer Jordan what he truly needs.
Casey understands grief. He lost a wife he dearly loved. He never expected to rediscover his hope for life in the arms of a grieving child.
