BEST SILK AND SONG BOOKS

For those readers looking to get into the “Silk and Song” series by Dana Stabenow, this section will help with that. It will go over the novels “Everything Under the Heavens”, “By the Shores of the Middle Sea”, and “The Land Beyond”.

Everything Under the Heavens: This is the first novel in the “Silk and Song” series and was released in the year 2014. Wu Johanna (she is only sixteen years old) has grown up on the back of a camel, it seems like, while going to and from marketplaces in the city and in the cool and shade of the Silk Road caravanserai. She lives in a world of pearl divers, servants, bandits, spice merchants, troubadours, and sheikhs. Trust is worth more in this world than gold is, having the right name is vital and it can unlock a lot of contacts from North Africa to Japan. After her father dies, she finds that lineage does not hold much weight; especially when the court of the Khan is disintegrating. Dynastic loyalties are moving to other people. Jealousies that are petty lead to murders in cold blood. Long knives are being taken out. Johanna wants a future, but she may not find one here. She will have to use her wits, sudden change in her fortune, and the tight circle of friends and fellow travelers that she has. Whatever her destiny is, assuming she has one at all, is more than a continent away.

By the Shores of the Middle Sea: This is the second novel in the “Silk and Song” series and was released in the year 2014. Johanna finds herself prisoner in Talikan. Baron Ogodei’s army pillages all around the countryside and gets ready to sack the tiny enclave the Persians have. Many leagues to the south (in Kabul) Jaufre’s near fatal wound is healing up. They have gone halfway across the continent; they still must get to Gaza, a place that Johanna and Jaufre were supposed to head to Venice and get to the sanctuary that will be offered by the family of Johanna’s grandfather’s family. This passage will help shape their destiny, if they could just get there.

The Land Beyond: This is the third novel in the “Silk and Song” series and was released in the year 2015. This novel opens in the year 1324. Johanna has survived a lot. She works with an orphan of the Road (who is a boy named Jaufre and he has been raised to accompany her). They hope to become more than what they are. They go on the Road, something that links to all manner of other things. One of which being a fabled port of the Middle Sea, Venice. They have to get through a lot of things first. Like treachery, one war of conquest, and being betrayed, a separation that lasts quite a while; not to mention that the Road has thieves and robbers that are more courageous because the Mongol Empire is ending. They meet all kinds of new people, but at the end, find Marco Polo, while he is on his death bed.

  1. I like that these are historical fiction, so you feel like you are kind of “learning” while reading them. That’s one of the only good things about the series though, unfortunately. The writing is jumbled at times and there are issues with continuity. The characters start as teenagers and it is interesting to watch them grow up, even if they don’t act similarly from book to book. Glad I read these books, but glad I’m done with them too. I won’t be reading them again.
