The infection turns them into superheroes of a kind, giving them superior speed, strength and senses. The group call their new powers ‘flaring’ and they are a main feature of the entire Virals series of books, as they help the group out when they’re in trouble. The group must work together to not only solve a murder, but to control their new-found powers and use them at just the right times.

This installment just shows just how much Kathy Reichs is an awesome writer. As an author, Kathy is used to penning down adult fiction but not teenage fiction. However, upon reading Virals, you are definitely going to forget that this is the author’s very first teenage novel. She has not written expertly, but she has also written in a manner that shows she clearly understands her target audience and also how to make them gripped. She also knows all the right ideas and twists. With that said, the writing style in Virals is much similar to the one that the author uses in the Temperance Brennan book series. The book is full of intelligent and easy to understand science explanations. All the characters in this book are not only believable but also easily invested in. The second book is Seizure, which features the protagonist, Tory Brenan. Tory and her friends are trying to establish what really happened in the first book.

The four kids have been exposed to an exceedingly dangerous virus, which has in turn altered their DNA. In the process, the kids have developed weird capabilities, much similar to that of wolves. Their natural senses have been enhanced, and in the process, it has created a human pack. Just as the novel begins, Tory’s father drops an unexpected bomb. Due to the sudden decline in the economy, the funds allocated to his father’s research are withdrawn, thereby necessitating a change in career. Furthermore, her father is also forced to move away from South Carolina. This, in turn, would mean that Tory would be forced to move away from the pack. Determined to stay together, Tory, Hi, Shelton and Ben come together once more to search for Anne Bonny, one of America’s famous pirate. It does not take long before things turn for the worst when the pack learns that they are not the only individuals who are searching for the pirate.

They will definitely need their abilities if they are going to survive. Slipping out of the house after curfews, dodging bullets, following obscure clues into some of the town’s underground tunnels, snarky classmates, and Cotillion duties, these are just but a part of the adventure.
